when i went
to nyu
there was this band there
called Black Dice
and everyone was scared of them.
people would say "oh the singer
swings the microphone around the club
and hits people in the head and they break
tables and chairs" and thought they were crazy.
i saw them a few times and everytime
it sounded like 8 oranatangs locked in a room
with 9 guitars and 13 effects pedals.
i thought it was really boring.
i used to see bands like that in high school and it was funny.
it's funny when it's 15 year old kids playing for 15 year old kids
it's hard to be a full fledged pretentious asshole when you are 15,
there is still an innocence there.
but when you have adults taking this seriously, it's kind of sad.
i saw them and it was 4 kids who weighed about 500 pounds total.
i told my friend, i'll kick their ass by myself and she went:
"no no, they use SPEED!"
i'll tell you one thing they didn't use and that was SOAP.
they all smelled bad.
and they played music like tone deaf special needs children.
people tell me they have gotten better, that they listen to psych and krautrock and
electronic stuff and are now "experimental" and not "hardcore."
that's cool.
i bet they still suck.
but are now boring instead of noisy.
one hell of a trade off.
black dice.
